Thunderst0rm jailbreak that claimed to be able to jailbreak the iPhone OS 3.1.3 has turned out to be a fake. The file size is due to a bunch of unnecessary files that are included in the package and the tool only seems to call a simple message box (according to the reverse engineered code by iH8sn0w).

So clearly, don’t waste your time and risk your machine by downloading this tool. It is meant to only show a dialog box. There is absolutely no interaction whatsoever taking place with any of the iDevices connected. The reversed engineered code shown below (image via iH8sn0w) confirms this. It is only meant to call a message box.

In fact, this software will not jailbreak anything. iPhone hacking website modmyi has proven just how useless these two programs really are. There was speculation they might install spyware but it seems they are just annoying fakes.

There are two legit exploits for iPhone OS 3.1.3. One is being developed by Geohot and is called limera1n. The other was named Spirit by its developer Comex. These are expected to come out soon, or might not even be launched until after iPhone OS 4.0 is publicly available. They are also likely to work as an iPad jailbreak. The two developers are working together to maximize the impact of the exploits and delay any patch by Apple.
