Geohot hack brings back other OS support for PS3, GeoHot hacks down PlayStation 3 FirmWare v3.21 to allow users 'Install Other OS', GeoHot Demos Other OS Support Retained on PS3

Sony's latest firmware to its PS3, version 3.21, has removed the ability to install other operating systems on the gaming console, but iPhone hacker George Hotz has been in news again after finding a way to hack into Sony PlayStation 3 gaming console. As promised, Hotz has demonstrated custom firmware 3.21 for PlayStation 3 through a video. This custom firmware can be installed by restoring a custom PUP (PlayStation 3 Update) file. No specific date to release the custom firmware for the PS 3 has been promised yet.

Seems like he proved yet again what he is capable of, demonstrating on a PS3 system. The custom firmware GeoHot labeled to be v3.21oo, runs flawlessly on a PlayStation 3 system, showing "System Software Version 3.21" as well as being able to boot into a Linux environment without a hitch. The custom firmware is only for the users running on v3.15 or prior firmware, and those who already updated their PS3 with Sony's v3.21 firmware are out of luck.

Users who want to retain Other OS support in PS 3 need to wait for the custom firmware to be out. Proxy hack can be used to connect 3.15 firmware loaded PS 3 for playing games online. Hotz hasn't clarified if the hacked console might get banned from PlayStation Network. Last November, Microsoft had banned around a million Xbox LIVE players for using hacked consoles.

Note that if the update 3.21 is optional, Sony still stated that if you oppose the installation, the user would no longer be able to access the PlayStation Network and meet potential reading problems for Blu-ray or video protected by DRM. As a precaution, they could in effect require the latest system.

Geohot went on to explain that it’s installable by restoring the custom PUP file and He also mentions this hack could possibly be the key to enable the OtherOS option for the PS3 Slim models which was never available before.
“This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file, but only from 3.15 or previous. It’s possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I’ll know when my infectus gets here.”

All you need to do is restore a custom generated PUP file on your PS3, although this hasn’t been released yet, you can find out more details over at Geohot’s website http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/.
