Bret Michaels has had a "setback" in his recovery, developing a side-effect which leads to seizures.

The Poison rocker suffered a brain haemorrhage on Thursday, and was rushed to hospital. He remains in the intensive care unit at the clinic as doctors battle to find what has caused the condition. His condition is still stable.

His website is being constantly updated with news about his condition, and currently states he is in "positive spirits".

Bret underwent an emergency appendectomy earlier this month, and also has type I diabetes.

There have been claims the surgery and existing medical condition may have played a part in his latest hospitalisation, and the statement says medics are looking into what caused it.

"Many people are speculating Michaels' head injury suffered from a prop striking the singer at the Tony awards last June is the cause. Additional studies are planned throughout the week to hopefully detect the exact cause of the rupture," it reads.

"The most common cause of this condition is a spontaneous rupture of a cerebral aneurysm, however 15 to 20 percent of spontaneous episodes of this haemorrhage are found to have no cause. Doctors state Michaels is very lucky as his condition could have been fatal."

The hospital where the 47-year-old is receiving treatment has not been revealed, although E! News is reporting he is at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Bret’s father Wally Sychak has said his son is improving. He has spoken to the rock star, and says although his speech is slower than usual he knew who he was and was able to converse properly.

"Well, the fact that he was talking to me, and giving me information, I thought that was great," he told American programme Extra.
